1:72 Focke Wulf Fw 189C/V-6 Mask, a masking set in 1:72 scale

This is not an airplane model but an accessory. The set contains pre-cut self-adhesive masking templates meant for painting the framing of the glazing on a model of the Focke-Wulf Fw 189 airplane in the C version and the V-6 prototype in 1:72 scale. The masks are stuck directly onto the parts of the canopy, and once sprayed they are peeled off and the frames stay sharply bounded. The exact number of templates and the extent of the coverage are stated on the packaging of the set.

Why use masks

The framing of glazing is one of the most difficult details in 1:72 scale. Painting by hand with a brush almost always leaves an uneven edge, sticking strips of tape on is lengthy and on rounded shapes rarely accurate. A pre-cut mask respects the shape and saves hours of work, and the result is cleaner than what most modelers achieve by hand. On the Fw 189 type that goes twice over, as the C version and the V-6 prototype differed markedly in the arrangement of the forward section from the commonly built reconnaissance variant with its richly glazed fuselage, so a universal mask will not fit this form.

Use

• Degrease the glazing part first and let it dry perfectly.
• Lift the template off with pointed tweezers or a scalpel, so that it is not deformed.
• Lay it on dry, check the position and only then press it down all the way around.
• Lay the paint on in several thin coats, not in one thick one; you will limit seepage under the mask.
• Peel the mask off shortly after the paint dries, while the edge is not yet brittle.
