About product

French Army Sledge Train 2, figures 1:72 from Strelets

A set of unpainted figures and accessories in 1:72 scale from the production of the firm Strelets. By theme it belongs to the Napoleonic wars and captures a French sledge train, that is, a rear-area column of drawn sledges. According to the name this is the second part of the same line, so it can be put together with the first part and with other foot and mounted sets of the same scale. The castings are of soft plastic in one color and are supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

The train belonged to the inconspicuous but indispensable part of the armies of the day. Without the transport of ammunition, provisions and the wounded a field corps could not keep going in the field, and the speed of an advance depended on the passability of the roads. In winter in Eastern Europe sledges replaced wheeled wagons, moving more easily over packed snow and frozen roads and not sinking into mud. That is precisely why sledge columns appear on most dioramas devoted to the winter campaigns of the beginning of the nineteenth century.

Building and painting tips

Soft plastic is durable and does not become brittle, but by itself it does not hold paint. First wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent, so that residues of the release agent from the mold disappear, and once they are perfectly dry apply a thin layer of primer. Without it the acrylic flakes off the edges at every handling. Do not sand the flash and the parting seams dry; a sharp scalpel drawn along the surface takes them off more cleanly. For gluing use cyanoacrylate or a glue intended for soft plastics, as ordinary polystyrene cement does not dissolve this material. The wood of the sledges looks convincing when a dry brush in a lighter tone is drawn over a brown base and the gaps between the planks are accented with a dark wash. Add the snow on the base only at the end, after the figures are fixed with matte clear.

FAQ

The make-up differs between individual releases of the set; the make-up stated on the packaging is always binding.

No. The castings are in one color of plastic, unpainted. The sledges and the teams are assembled, while the figures are only separated from the sprue and cleaned up.

Best of all with acrylic over a good primer. Without a base the paint on soft plastic cracks and flakes off, and finished figures moreover pay off being fixed with matte clear.

Yes, the scale is standard and the set is built as an addition to combat sets from the same manufacturer. Small differences in the height of figures between brands are common in a diorama.
