The 1:72 French Tankers figures represent the crew of a French armored vehicle. Without a crew, every tank in a cabinet reads as an exhibit; with one it turns into a scene at once.
The French armored forces entered 1940 with a varied park of machines. Alongside the heavy Char B1 bis stood the medium Somua S35 and the small infantry Renault R35, and each of them had a crew of a different number of men. A characteristic feature was the padded helmet with a reinforced crest and the short working jacket, which set itself apart from the infantry uniform at first glance. The figures thus also work as a quick key to the nationality of the machine.
The leather and the canvas areas stand against each other through their sheen: the helmet will benefit from a light satin, the clothing from a matte surface instead. The blue-gray cast of French equipment is easily lost, so shift it a shade lighter than reality would call for. Finish the hands and the face last; those are the areas the eye notices first.
Plan where the figures will go in the turret and on the armor before you start painting; it will save you a lot of adjustment.
