About product

Photo-etched accessories 1:72 FT-17 from Hauler

A photo-etched metal fret from the Czech maker Hauler for a plastic model of the French Renault FT tank, commonly designated FT-17, in 1:72 scale. It is an accessory to an already purchased First to Fight kit, not the model itself.

The real subject

The Renault FT of 1917 is considered the first tank with the layout still in use today: a tracked chassis, a rotating turret with the weapon on top, the engine at the rear and the driver at the front. It was markedly smaller and cheaper than the British and French giants of the day, which made production in large numbers possible. After the First World War it spread to a number of armies and in modified forms it was still in service at the beginning of the Second World War.

What photo-etched parts change on this tank

The FT is a tiny machine, so in 1:72 scale the model literally sits in the palm of your hand and every coarse part shows. That applies most of all to the sheet-metal areas: the covers, loops, grilles and small brackets, which in reality are of thin material. A metal etched part has a real thickness, and on a model of this size that means a visible step forward in the overall impression.

Tips for working with brass

Brass is soft, which in shaping is an advantage as well as a risk. Shape curved parts by running over them gradually on a soft surface rather than with one sharp bend, as the metal will remember the shape and will not crack. For straight bends use a bending tool or two blades and always run them along the etched line. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and apply a thin primer, otherwise the paint will rub off during handling. It is glued with cyanoacrylate in small drops; the excess is hard to remove and clogs the detail.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building hardware of the First World War and the interwar period
  • Builders of small models, where coarse parts show the most
  • Anyone interested in competition building in 1:72 scale
  • Those who already have a scalpel, tweezers and cyanoacrylate glue

This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a standalone model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a photo-etched accessory to a plastic kit, which has to be owned or bought separately.

By running over them gradually on a soft surface, not with one sharp bend. Brass is soft and will keep the shape.

Yes. Degrease it with alcohol and go over it with a thin primer, otherwise paint will not hold on the smooth surface.

The number of parts is stated on the box of the fret.
