Masks for the national insignia and markings for the Mitsubishi G4M2 Betty Model 22/24 in 1:72 scale from the Dead Design brand. The template defines the shape of the hinomaru, which is then sprayed in paint directly into the finish. Target kit: Hasegawa.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set of templates for spraying the Japanese national insignia and markings onto the twin-engine naval bomber Mitsubishi G4M2 in the Model 22 and Model 24 versions. The template defines the shape of the hinomaru, the paint is applied with an airbrush and the insignia stays directly in the paint layer. The set is meant for the Hasegawa kit.
The fuselage of the Betty is long and smooth, the wing large and full of panel lines. Decal discs of this size readily wrinkle on such an area and after drying the carrier film shows around them as a glossy outline. A sprayed insignia has no such edge, it takes a matte or semi-gloss overcoat and it is not troubled by later picking out of the panel lines either.
The machine designated the Type 1 Rikko was the main land-based torpedo and bomber aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The Model 22 and Model 24 belonged to the late series with more powerful Kasei engines and revised defensive armament. The crews went on blaming them for the fragility of the wing tanks, however. In this scale the finished model has a span of around thirty-five centimeters, so the insignia on the wing is a large area and every inaccuracy shows.
Let the camouflage finish cure thoroughly and only then lay the masks on and press them down around the whole perimeter. Spray an opaque white under the red disc, otherwise the shade will sink into the dark green. Meter the paint out in thin coats at right angles to the surface and remove the template before the finish has fully hardened.
