About product

Gloster Gladiator - engine and cowling in 1:72

This item is not a kit of the aircraft but an accessory set for a model of the British Gloster Gladiator biplane fighter in 1:72. It concerns the engine and its cowling, that is the most exposed part of the whole aircraft: on a machine with a radial engine the front of the aircraft is the first thing a viewer sees on a model, and a finer rendering of the cylinders and the cooling ring shows at first glance. The set is made by the Hungarian brand SBS Model, which has long focused on aircraft accessories and resin kits. The set is meant for the Airfix kit, which has to be obtained separately.

The real subject

The Gladiator was the last biplane fighter of the Royal Air Force, and by the time it entered service a new generation of monoplanes was already catching up with it. Even so it managed to do remarkable work. It was powered by a Bristol radial engine, it had an enclosed pilot's cockpit, which was unusual on a biplane, and it carried four machine guns. It fought over Norway, Greece and North Africa, and it earned a legendary reputation over Malta in the first months of the siege of the island. Besides the British a number of other countries used it, among them the Finnish Air Force in the Winter War.

Usage and painting tips

Assemble and paint the engine on its own, before you cover it with the cowling. The cylinders look truer in a dark metallic shade with the edges of the fins picked out, and the crankcase can be set apart in a lighter tone. A dark wash will give depth, but in this scale apply it sparingly. Wash the resin parts before painting and lay a primer under them; they are glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue).
