About product

Glazing masks for the Wildcat Mk.VI 1:72 (Eduard)

A set of die-cut self-adhesive masks for building a model of the Wildcat Mk.VI carrier fighter in 1:72 scale from the Czech maker Eduard. Note that it is not a set of photo-etched parts nor a kit, but a masking set for painting. Eduard uses Japanese kabuki paper for its masks, which follows the curves of glazing well, stays in place and leaves no adhesive residue on the clear coat once it is removed. The masks are die-cut to the shape of the glazing of a particular kit and need not fit a model from another maker. The extent of the set is given on the packaging.

The real subject

In British service the designation Wildcat Mk.VI was carried by machines of the FM-2 type, that is, the lightened late version of the Wildcat carrier fighter, built for operation from small escort carriers. Compared with the earlier releases it had a taller fin area and a revised powerplant. It was a classic carrier fighter with folding wings and massive landing gear retracting into the fuselage.

Usage tips

Degrease the glazing and let it dry. Lift the masks with tweezers and, once they are placed, press them down along the whole perimeter; with rounded frames work in small sections, so that the paper follows the curve with no creases. Spray the interior shade first, then the base color of the airframe, otherwise the frame will shine in a different color when seen from inside. Apply the paint in thin layers; a heavy layer readily bleeds and creates a step. Remove the masks shortly after drying; kabuki paper comes away easily with the tip of tweezers or a sharp toothpick.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building carrier aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • builders who want sharp frames with no painting by hand
  • modelers who have used frame decals so far and were not satisfied
  • a competition build, where the cockpit is judged from close up

The set is an aid for painting. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
