Four covers will break up a uniform area of roadway and give it scale. The Spalah brand offers them as a scenic element for smaller dioramas; according to the name there are four pieces in the box and no other equipment belongs with them. They can be used on a base under a single vehicle as well as in a more extensive scene with several buildings.
The smaller the scale, the more important it is that there should be something on the ground to look at. Covers fill this role cheaply and unobtrusively: distributed over the roadway they suggest a network of services below the surface and at the same time give away where the axis of the street runs. They find a use in a town scene, in a courtyard and on a paved area by a building. They also prove their worth in factory grounds, where they hint at where the service shafts run.
Wash and dry the parts before painting, otherwise the paint holds badly on the smooth surface. Glue them with super glue and rather one at a time, so that the spacings can be adjusted as you go. For color you will manage with three steps: a dark base, a rusty transition and a light lightening of the raised pattern. Lay the surrounding dirt on at the very end, so that the cover merges with the roadway and does not come across as a foreign body. Remove any flash with a sharp knife before gluing.
