A decal sheet with Polish markings for the Hawker Hurricane Mk.I fighter, the second series of subjects.
Responsibility details are not available.
When the Battle of Britain broke out in the summer of 1940, the Poles made up the largest foreign group among the defenders of the island. Pilots who had fought their way to England through Romania and France had two lost campaigns behind them and an immense appetite to carry on. The British formed squadrons of their own from them and put them on Hurricanes – aircraft slower than contemporary Spitfires, but sturdy, easy to repair and surprisingly willing in a turn.
The first production version of the Hurricane carried a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine and eight 7.7 mm machine guns spread through the wing. On older examples the rear fuselage had fabric covering over a tubular frame, which made the aircraft the last major fighter type still built in the manner of the 1930s. Hits that would have put an all-metal structure out of action could often be patched up on it overnight.
Among the Polish fighter pilots appeared names that stayed in the British records: men with several kills in a single day, mechanics able to return a damaged machine to the air within a few hours, and commanders who had to explain to their people why they must not go into a fight on their own account. For the Polish units the ratio of successes to their own losses was among the best in the whole campaign.
This is the second series of subjects on this theme, that is a continuation of the earlier sheet with the machines of further pilots and units. The decals are applied over a smooth gloss base; on a matte finish a light haze forms under the carrier film, which then cannot be removed.
