About product

Hobby 2000 1:72 Heinkel He-111P, Western Campaign 1940

The plastic kit from Hobby 2000 in 1:72 scale captures the German Heinkel He-111 medium bomber in the P version, in a boxing aimed at the Western Campaign of 1940. It is a reissue: the plastic parts come from Hasegawa molds, the decals are printed by Cartograf and the package is completed with masks and one 3D-printed part. The number of parts and the number of marking options are stated on the box; go by the figures given there.

The real subject

The Heinkel He-111 was a twin-engine all-metal bomber which came into being in the mid-1930s under the cover of a transport design and became one of the main types of the German bomber force. The P version is the one on which the fully glazed, asymmetric nose with a gun gondola projecting beneath it appeared, the shape by which the He-111 is recognized at first glance. In its powerplant the P differs from the later and most numerous H version: it has liquid-cooled inverted V12 Daimler-Benz DB 601 engines, whereas the H version received Junkers Jumo 211 engines. The machines of the P version bore the main weight of operations over France and the British Isles in 1940, that is exactly the period this box is devoted to.

Building and painting tips

The glazing of the nose is the dominant feature on the He-111, so it pays to give the cockpit time before the fuselage is closed; once it is glued together you can no longer get into it. Glue the clear parts with thinner cement for plastic, carefully and away from the visible faces, ideally spot by spot. The framing of the glazing is work for masks or for a very patient hand. Spray gloss varnish before the decals so that matte edges do not appear under them, and once dry work the whole surface over with a matte coat. Bring out the panel lines with a thin wash at the very end; on a twin-engine bomber in 1:72 it is precisely fine weathering that makes the difference between a toy and a model.

Who the model is for

  • Those interested in the German bomber force of 1940
  • Builders of twin-engine machines in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who want an earlier He-111 version with DB 601 engines in their collection
  • More advanced beginners who dare to take on a glazed nose

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Chiefly in its powerplant. The He-111P has liquid-cooled inverted V12 Daimler-Benz DB 601 engines, whereas the more numerous H version received Junkers Jumo 211 engines. Both versions already have the fully glazed asymmetric nose.

It is a reissue. The plastic parts come from Hasegawa molds and Hobby 2000 adds its own Cartograf decals, masks and a 3D-printed part.

Rather for a more advanced builder. The extensive glazing of the nose and an interior that is out of reach once the fuselage is closed call for planning the sequence and for patience while masking.
