The Il-2 was a Soviet single-engine attack aircraft whose forward fuselage was formed by a load-bearing armored bathtub protecting the engine, the radiators and the pilot. It was designed for low-level attacks on ground targets and became the most numerously produced military aircraft in history. The early machines were single-seaters; later ones received a rear gunner. The landing gear is a tailwheel arrangement: the two main wheels retract into fairings under the wing and stay partly exposed, so they remain visible on a model. Operating from unpaved strips meant the wheels were muddy and worn, an ideal subject for weathering.
