A set of pre-cut masks, 1:72 J8M1 Shusui - Japanese national insignia, from Dead Design for spraying the hinomaru instead of using decals.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is not a kit but an accessory for a finished model. The set contains pre-cut self-adhesive masks of the Japanese national insignia. The Mitsubishi J8M1 Shusui was a rocket interceptor based on the German Me 163, meant to protect Japanese cities against raids by heavy bombers. Only prototypes were built by the end of the war and the type never reached combat service.
Why spray the insignia through a mask
A sprayed insignia is part of the paint layer. It has no glossy edge, forms no step and does not silver, so a gloss varnish under a decal and a softener both fall away. On a tailless aircraft with a short fuselage the insignia moreover end up on markedly curved areas of the wing, where a decal breaks easily and forms creases.
Let the coat cure thoroughly, otherwise the mask will bite into the paint when it is lifted. Place the mask according to the color scheme drawing, press the edges down all the way around and smooth the transition with a toothpick. Spray the paint in several thin coats perpendicular to the edge of the mask, so that it cannot creep under it. Lift the mask off while the paint is fresh, pulling at a low angle to the surface.
