About product

Double-sided Art Scale masking set 1:72 Kawasaki Ki-61-Id

A self-adhesive masking set for a model in 1:72 scale from the Czech manufacturer Art Scale. It is not a kit or decals but an accessory for a build: it covers the clear areas of the cockpit canopy and of any other transparent parts so that only the framing is left exposed, which is then sprayed with paint. The version is double-sided, so both the outer and the inner side of the clear part are masked. The framing can thus be sprayed from inside in the interior shade and only then from outside in the top camouflage, which is the procedure that gives the cleanest result on models in a small scale.

The real subject

The Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien was a Japanese single-engine fighter of the Second World War period. Among contemporary Japanese types it stood apart with a liquid-cooled V engine, thanks to which it had a slender nose and a characteristic silhouette. The Ki-61-I Tei configuration, also listed as the Ki-61-Id, is a late production version with a modified fuselage and changed armament. The cockpit canopy has several narrow, slightly curved frames, and following them by hand with a brush or applying strips of tape is one of the most tedious steps of a build in this scale.

How to use the mask

First remove grease and fingerprints from the clear part and let it dry completely. Transfer the mask onto the part with tweezers, lay it along the frame and press it down with a soft tool so that the edge seats without bubbles. Trim any overhang with a fresh scalpel blade exactly along the outline, choosing minimal pressure so that the clear plastic is not scratched. Mask the inner surface of the canopy in the same way before you glue the part to the cockpit. Spray in thin coats; a heavy application of paint runs under the edge of the mask. Take the mask off as soon as the paint has flashed off but is not yet fully cured, as the edge is sharpest then. Pull it back over itself rather than straight off the surface.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building Japanese fighters in 1:72 scale
  • Those who want sharp framing without following it by hand with a brush
  • Builders who paint with an airbrush and want the framing in two shades
  • Beginners for whom masking the canopy is the hardest step of a build

It is an accessory for a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The set contains masks for the outer and the inner side of the clear part. You can therefore spray the framing from inside in the interior shade of the cockpit and only then from outside in the top camouflage, so that the canopy looks realistic from both sides once finished.

No. The masks are cut to the shape of the canopy of a particular kit. On a model from another manufacturer or from another tooling they need not line up, so check before buying which kit the set is intended for.

Best of all shortly after the paint has dried, while the layer is not yet fully cured. The edge comes away most cleanly then. Pull the mask slowly back over itself, not straight up.

It is not. It is a separate masking accessory; the kit and the paints have to be bought as well.
