A model of the unmanned KDA-1 Firebee target drone in 1:72 scale from the Czech maker Plusmodel. This is an early form of the Firebee family, that is the machine with which this very long line of development began. For the modeler it is a rewarding complement to Cold War aircraft as well as an exhibit in its own right, which on a shelf raises the question of what it actually is.
The Firebee is a jet-powered unmanned target drone used for training pilots, for practicing air defense and for testing missile armament. The early form designated KDA-1 served with the US Navy. The target was released from a carrier aircraft or launched from the ground and, once its task was done, it came down on a parachute, which made repeated use possible and markedly reduced the cost of training.
Wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and level the surfaces. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). For the bold finish of the target use a rich color applied over a white base, otherwise it will look dirty. Leave the surface rather clean with local wear at the attachment points and at the panels, because the target was inspected and repaired after every flight.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
