A photo-etched metal fret from the Czech maker Hauler for a plastic model of the small German half-track tractor known as the Kettenkrad, in 1:72 scale. It is an accessory to the S-Model kit; the model itself is not part of the package.
The Kettenkrad, that is the Sd.Kfz. 2, was an unusual machine combining a front motorcycle fork with a tracked chassis. It arose as a light tractor for places an ordinary vehicle could not reach, and it was used for towing light loads, laying out cable and carrying a small payload. Thanks to its low weight it was also counted on for air transport. After the war a number of the machines found use in farming and forestry.
The Kettenkrad is a tiny machine even in reality, so a model in 1:72 scale measures only a few centimeters. It is precisely there that the limits of injection-molded plastic tell most harshly: the fenders, grab handles, covers and small brackets come out disproportionately thick, because the mold will not allow thinner material. A metal part in tenths of a millimeter gives the model back the proportions the subject had.
Work over a light-colored surface with a raised edge, as parts of this size tend to spring away and are then never found on a dark table. Cut them off with a scalpel and hold them with a second pair of tweezers. Dose the glue with a pin from a drop on a piece of plastic, never straight from the bottle; with small parts an amount barely visible to the naked eye is enough. The thicker gel variant gives a few seconds more for positioning. Degrease with alcohol before painting and apply a primer. Fenders and other thin areas are best glued on only once the chassis is painted, as otherwise you will not reach it later.
This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a standalone model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
