The second package of the Red Box mounted series in 1:72 scale. The figures are supplied unglued and unpainted. The sets designated set 1 and set 2 are sold as separate products, so a modeler can compose a mounted group step by step.

The real subject

The armored cavalry of this period wore protective armor on the torso, often complemented by covering of the head and the shoulders. Beside a polearm, the equipment included a bow with a quiver, which at 1:72 scale is cast as a small separate detail at the saddle. The saddle, the stirrups and the bridle make up the greater part of the articulated surface of the horse and at this scale they decide the resulting impression more than the rider's expression.

Building and painting tips

If you want to join set 1 and set 2 into one group, first unify a color key for yourself: choose two or three shades of the horses' coats and hold to them across both packages, otherwise the formation comes across as fragmented. Attach the figures to a skewer or a cork so that you do not touch them while painting. A procedure from the bottom up, the horse, the harness, the rider, the armor, the small accessories, saves corrections. Apply a flowing wash only into the recesses and draw the excess off with a brush so that the armor does not turn gray. Make the spacing of the figures on the base irregular; a regular rank looks unnatural in a mounted scene. The end belongs to a matte varnish, possibly with a spot of gloss varnish on the horses' eyes.
