About product

The R-35 light tank in the late guise, 1:72 scale

The kit captures the French R-35 light tank in its late production form in 1:72 scale. It is issued by the Polish brand First to Fight, which concentrates on small ground subjects of the late 1930s in the same scale. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted; the exact contents of the package and the number of parts are not stated here.

The real subject

The R-35 came about in the second half of the 1930s as a light tank intended for close infantry support. It was short and comparatively tall and built on a combination of a cast hull and a cast single-man turret, which simplified manufacture but also meant that the commander worked the gun on his own. The running gear consisted of small rubber-tired road wheels sprung through rubber elements, thanks to which the vehicle could take difficult ground but did not reach a high speed. The late production series differed from early machines in details of structure and equipment; the type was built in large numbers and after 1940 appeared, in various conversions, outside its original service as well.

Building and painting tips

A small model in 1:72 scale appreciates fine tools — separate the parts from the sprues with cutters and clean them up with a scalpel, so that the small details are not lost. Assemble and paint the running gear before the fenders cover it. At this scale multicolored camouflage is better sprayed with thinly diluted paint from a shorter distance, or the dividing lines are drawn in with a brush. The cast surface of the hull and turret is brought out by a fine texture created with paint softened by thinner or by light stippling with a brush; at the end add a flowing shade into the recesses and dry dust on the running gear.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of ground subjects of the late 1930s in 1:72 scale.
  • For modelers who build smaller tanks into groupings and dioramas.
  • For beginning builders looking for a straightforward model.
  • For anyone interested in French armored subjects.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
