The real subject

The Super Bazooka is an American antitank rocket launcher of 88.9 mm caliber, that is three and a half inches. It replaced the weaker launcher from the end of the Second World War and saw combat use on a larger scale in Korea, where it served the infantry against the medium tanks of the day. The weapon is carried on the shoulder, it is served by two men, and for carrying the tube splits into two parts. The projectile is a rocket with a shaped charge warhead, so the effect does not depend on the velocity at impact but on whether the warhead strikes squarely.

Where you will use the accessory

In 1:72 scale the real weapon, a meter and a half long, measures only about two centimeters. It is exactly such small things that give a diorama scale and narrative sense: a launcher propped against a wall, laid on the fender of a vehicle or carried by a soldier tells what is happening in the scene far better than one more vehicle would. It comes into its own in scenes from the 1950s and with the later armies that took this weapon over.

Building and painting tips

• cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the rest back
• before painting, wash the part in lukewarm soapy water and let it dry out
• choose the method of gluing according to the material of the parts; the procedure is given in the manufacturer's instructions
• the thin tube will take very little bending, so support it along its whole length when cleaning it up
• lay the paint down in thin coats, so that the fine relief does not clog
