About product

Miles M.38 Messenger in civil service, 1:72

This injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale from the Czech maker Kovozavody Prostejov is aimed at civil operation of the British Messenger light aircraft. After the war these machines passed into the hands of private owners and smaller operators, which brought varied and far more colorful schemes than on the military versions - and it is those the boxing targets. It is short-run production; it is worth trying the parts dry before gluing and sanding the mating surfaces to fit as needed. The number of parts, the contents of the package and the number of schemes are given in the instructions supplied with the kit.

The real subject

The Miles M.38 Messenger was a British single-engine light aircraft with a strut-braced wing, fixed landing gear and a striking triple vertical tail. It appeared during the Second World War for liaison and observation duties, and its strengths were good handling at low speeds and the ability to operate from short strips. After the war the type found a use in civil operation as a touring and sporting aircraft; some machines flew long afterward and turned up at air shows. It was precisely that civil career that gave the Messenger its varied color schemes, which make the model rewarding in a display case.

Building and painting tips

Cut the sprue stubs off, sand them with fine paper and try every subassembly dry before you glue it. Choose a thin plastic cement and run it into the seam by capillary action. Align the wing struts on a flat surface and let them cure thoroughly. Mask and spray the glazing frames rather than brush-painting them. Civil schemes often feature gloss areas and strong colors, so take care over a smooth base and lay the paint on in thin coats. Apply the decals onto a gloss clear coat and finish with an overcoat in a sheen that matches the chosen scheme; leave out overdone weathering on a civil aircraft.

Who the model is for

  • Anyone interested in postwar civil and sporting aircraft
  • Modelers who want a colorful model in the display case without a wartime theme
  • Builders with experience of short-run kits
  • Collectors of British light aircraft in 1:72 scale

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Chiefly in the color scheme and the markings. The civil machines had more varied color schemes than the military Mk.I, while the airframe itself stays the same.

The number of schemes is given in the instructions supplied with the kit. The boxing is aimed at civil operation of the type.

It is a short-run kit, so count on sanding and filling. The most demanding part is aligning the wing struts.

The key is a smooth base. Sand the surface carefully, apply a primer and spray the paint in several thin coats rather than all at once.
