The designation HVSS stands for horizontal volute spring suspension, which replaced the older vertical system. It brought wider tracks, a calmer ride and better going over soft ground, and it is the recognition mark of the late Shermans. The abbreviation POA-CWS-H5 refers to the flamethrower conversion developed by the American Chemical Warfare Service for the fighting in the Pacific area, where flamethrowers came into their own against fortified positions in caves and bunkers. The same approach proved itself a few years later in Korea too, where broken mountainous terrain and field fortifications again created an environment in which a flamethrower tank made sense. The Sherman was already obsolete by then, but as infantry support it was still useful.
