A decal sheet from the British brand Xtradecal in 1:72 scale intended for models of the Phantom in the British FG.1 and FGR.2 versions. It is the sixth part of a series that covers these machines step by step, so as a rule it does not overlap with the earlier parts. The particular aircraft are given by the manufacturer on the packaging of the sheet and before buying it pays to compare them with the model you want to build.
The British Phantoms differed from the American versions above all in their powerplant. In place of the original engines they were given Rolls-Royce Spey turbofans of greater diameter, which called for a wider rear fuselage, deeper air intakes and further changes to the airframe. The FG.1 version was adapted to operation from aircraft carriers, while the FGR.2 version came about as a multirole machine for land bases and carried out fighter as well as reconnaissance and strike tasks. In service the British Phantoms were held from the end of the 1960s until the first half of the 1990s.
Decals belong on a smooth glossy base. Matte paint is porous, the air under the carrier film stays in it and shows itself as a grayish silvery veil that can no longer be removed. Dip the cut-out decal in lukewarm water for only a few seconds and let it rest on a paper backing until it releases by itself. Longer soaking washes the adhesive away and the decal then will not hold on the model. You will fine-tune the position with a brush and a drop of water, soak the surplus water up with a paper towel and settle the decal at the end with a softener. Once it is perfectly dry, go over the whole model with a final varnish in the degree of sheen you want.
This is a decal sheet, that is an accessory for a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
