About product

Me P1103 in 1:72 scale: a photo-etched detail set

This item is not a kit or a finished model. It is an accessory set in etched metal sheet that a modeler uses while building the plastic kit of the Me P1103 aircraft in 1:72 scale named in the product title. The parts are etched on a fret from which they are taken one by one and fitted to the plastic base. The set is from the Czech maker Brengun.

Why photo-etched parts instead of plastic

Injected plastic has a technological limit of thickness. Everything that is made of thin sheet metal on the real aircraft comes out disproportionately thick and softly shaped in plastic. Etched sheet has a thickness in tenths of a millimeter and carries sharp detail, so once painted it reads substantially truer in a small scale. In 1:72 scale the cockpit is visible only through a small window, and it is precisely the sharpness of the edges and the fineness of the detail that decide how a model reads from close up.

Tips for working photo-etched parts

Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, not with nippers, as thin sheet is easily deformed by them. Make the bends in a bending tool or between two razor blades, always along the marked score line and in one movement. Stiffer sheet can be annealed briefly over a flame before bending and left to cool, which softens it considerably. Degrease the parts with alcohol or isopropyl alcohol before painting and spray a primer, otherwise paint will not hold on smooth metal and will peel off during handling. It is bonded with super glue applied with a pin in a minimal amount.

Who the set is for

  • modelers who are building the particular Brengun kit
  • builders of small scales who dislike a coarsely cast plastic interior
  • modelers with experience of photo-etched parts and super glue
  • a competition build, where the detail of the cockpit and the surface is judged

This is an accessory set, not a model. The kit, glue, paints and a primer are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is an accessory set of photo-etched metal parts intended for a plastic kit in 1:72 scale that you have already bought. The set cannot be built on its own.

Metal holds to plastic with super glue (cyanoacrylate) applied in a minimal amount with a pin or a wire. Modeling cement for plastic does not work on metal.

Yes. Degrease the parts with alcohol or isopropyl alcohol and apply a primer. Without a primer the paint will chip off smooth metal during handling.

Working with photo-etched parts in 1:72 scale calls for a sure hand, good light and a magnifier. We recommend it to modelers who already have at least one build with photo-etched parts behind them.
