This kit from the South Korean brand Academy covers the Israeli Merkava main battle tank in its third generation. The small scale keeps the demands on display case space low, while the characteristic wedge-shaped silhouette of the turret and the forward engine compartment stay clearly readable. It is classic injection-molded plastic, so a build with no need for special tools.
The Merkava came about as an answer to the experience of Israeli crews: the engine is at the front and forms one more obstacle between the crew and a hit, while at the rear there is a compartment with a door for boarding and evacuation. The Mk.III version was, despite a similar silhouette, practically a new design and entered service at the end of the 1980s. It carries a 120 mm smoothbore gun and a mortar on top of the turret; side skirts protect the running gear against shaped-charge hits.
Finish the running gear and the lower hull before you close up the upper part, otherwise it becomes hard to reach them later. The gun and the skirts deserve a check of their shape in good light, because at this scale every deviation catches the eye. The sand Israeli shade looks better when it is played out: a lighter touch on the horizontal surfaces, a darker flowed effect into the recesses and dry dust on the treads. Apply the decals onto a gloss surface and finally unify everything with matte varnish.
The model is intended to be assembled and painted; the package does not contain glue or paints.
