About product

MiG-17PF, 1:72 scale, a Smer plastic kit

An injection-molded plastic kit of the MiG-17PF jet fighter in 1:72 scale with a color scheme matching service in the war in Vietnam. Smer is a Czech manufacturer that has long devoted itself to kits of this scope; this is a classically conceived model with the usual breakdown of fuselage, wing, tail surfaces, landing gear and cockpit. Thanks to its straightforward build the model suits modelers who are starting out with jets, or serves as a basis for more thorough reworking.

The real subject

The MiG-17PF was the interceptor version of the MiG-17 fighter fitted with an onboard radar. It is distinguished from the day version at first sight by a lengthened nose with antenna covers around the air intake, which changes the silhouette of the forward fuselage. Power came from a jet engine with an afterburner and the armament consisted of cannon in the nose. The type came about as a complement to the day fighters for operations in reduced visibility and at night. In Vietnam the MiG-17 family was used above all for the defense of airspace; the radar-equipped version was represented there considerably less than the day version.

Building and painting tips

Before building, check the mating surfaces and any flash from the mold - with kits of this kind it pays to dry-fit the parts first and adjust them with abrasive paper. Glue with liquid cement for plastic applied by capillary action into the joint. The fuselage joints and the leading edges of the wing tend to be the places that need filling and sanding; after sanding, restore the engraved panel lines. It is a good idea to finish the cockpit before closing the fuselage and to mask the canopy with tape or a mask. Apply gloss varnish before the decals and matte varnish once it is dry. The metal areas of the rear fuselage around the exhaust nozzle are best dealt with using metallic shades applied by airbrush onto a smooth, well-sanded base.
