About product

Miles M.2H Hawk Major, 1:72

This injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale from the Czech maker Kovozavody Prostejov captures an elegant British light aircraft of the 1930s. The model is small but, thanks to its clean lines and slender fuselage, rewarding both to build and to display. It is short-run production - the parts have somewhat more pronounced sprue stubs and the joints guide less, so it pays to try every subassembly dry first. The exact number of parts, the contents of the package and the number of color schemes are given in the instructions supplied with the kit. Further releases of the same type aimed at particular operators or areas of service also exist.

The real subject

The Miles M.2 Hawk was a British single-engine cantilever low-wing monoplane with fixed landing gear and a wooden structure, developed in the first half of the 1930s. The M.2H Hawk Major version received an inverted inline engine and represented one of the more widespread forms of the type. The aircraft found a use in touring and sporting flights, in long-distance races and in training; its aerodynamically clean solution was a distinct step forward at a time when biplanes still prevailed. The wooden structure with fabric covering over parts of the airframe shows in the typical smooth and gently undulating surface, which is worth respecting when painting.

Building and painting tips

Cut the parts off, sand the remains of the sprue stubs and try the subassemblies dry. Run thin plastic cement into the seam by capillary action, then fill and sand the seams. The small cockpit is best finished and painted before the fuselage is closed up. Mask the glazing frames and spray them together with the rest of the airframe. Apply a primer before painting, which will even out the surface and reveal any remaining scratches. On a wooden and fabric structure keep the panel lines fine - a strong accent on rivets and seams would look out of place on this type. Apply the decals onto a gloss clear coat and finish the surface with a semi-matte or gloss overcoat according to the chosen scheme.

Who the model is for

  • Anyone interested in British light aircraft of the 1930s
  • Modelers who like civil and sporting subjects
  • Builders with experience of short-run kits
  • Collectors of smaller models in 1:72 scale that do not take up much room

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The exact number of parts is given in the instructions supplied with the kit. It is an injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale.

The sister releases of the same type are aimed at particular operators or areas of service and differ chiefly in the color schemes and the markings.

It is a short-run kit, so count on trying the parts dry, sanding and filling. The model is small and straightforward, though.

Keep the surface smooth and the panel lines fine. A strong accent on rivets and seams would look unconvincing on a wooden airframe with fabric covering.
