A model of the MJ-4 airfield munitions loader in its early form, in 1:72 scale. The lifting mechanism is rendered in the upper position, that is at the moment of loading stores onto the aircraft.
Responsibility details are not available.
A bomb or a missile cannot be hung under a wing by hand, because the load is far too heavy for that. The work is done by a low loader that drives in under the aircraft and carries the load up to the rack with its lifting mechanism, where the crew secures it. American equipment of this kind is listed under the designations MJ-4 and MHU-83 B/E, and among the personnel the nickname Jammer took hold for it. The model captures the early form of the vehicle.
This item renders the lifting mechanism in the upper position, that is at the moment when the load is up at the aircraft. In a scene that gives you action rather than just parked equipment: the truck stands under the wing and the crew is in the middle of loading. The manufacturer also offers a counterpart with the mechanism in the lower position, so both states can be built side by side. The 1:72 scale matches ordinary aircraft models.
If the parts are not made of polystyrene, liquid cement for plastic will not hold on them; they are fitted with super glue applied in a minute amount. Cut off excess material with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the rest down. Wash and degrease before painting. As you build, keep checking that the vehicle stands level and that the raised mechanism is horizontal, because a tilted load shows at once in a scene. Feel free to overdo the wear: in photographs ground equipment is dirtier than the aircraft.
For modelers who are building an airfield scene and want to capture an aircraft being prepared for flight. The aircraft model, the ordnance, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
