A masking set in 1:72 scale for the Japanese Kawanishi N1K1 Kyofu floatplane fighter. Shadow laid on through a stencil gives a smooth part the impression of relief. Intended for the Hasegawa kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
Stencils for spraying shaded transitions on the control surfaces of the Kawanishi N1K1 Kyofu floatplane fighter in 1:72 scale. The effect lies in the eye seeing a suggestion of relief and a separation of the movable part from the fixed one on a flat surface, even though the surface of the part stays smooth. The target kit is Hasegawa.
The Kyofu was designed as a fighter on floats that was to escort landings where no airfield stood yet. It carried one large central float and two auxiliary ones under the wing. When it turned out that the course of the war did not need such a machine, production stopped after a few hundred examples and the remaining aircraft served mainly in the defense of home waters. The significance of the Kyofu lies elsewhere: its airframe became the starting point for the later Shiden land-based fighter. The Allies assigned it the code name Rex.
Before applying, degrease the area and make sure no sanding dust is left on it. Lay the shadow on rather sparingly than heavily; in this scale a light suggestion is enough and an exaggerated contrast would look coarse. Protect the float struts during the work with a strip of paper tape. Keep a cotton swab at hand; fresh bleed is removed more easily than dried.
