About product

1:72 P-39/P-400 Airacobra over New Guinea, Part 1 decals

A decal set in 1:72 scale from DK Decals. It is intended for plastic models of the Bell P-39 Airacobra fighter and of its export P-400 version from the period of their use over New Guinea. The set contains no plastic or resin parts — it is an accessory for a model you already have or are yet to obtain. The series came out in several parts and this set is Part 1.

The real subject

The Bell P-39 Airacobra was an American single-seat fighter with an unusual layout. The Allison V-1710 engine sat behind the cockpit and drove the propeller through a long shaft running under the cockpit floor. The nose was therefore free to carry armament and the aircraft was given a nose landing gear, untypical for its day. The P-400 version came about originally as an export machine under the British designation Airacobra Mk.I; after it was taken over by the US Army Air Forces it differed from the home version mainly in the make-up of the armament in the nose. Because the engine was not given a turbocharger, performance fell away quickly at high altitude. At low and medium levels over the Pacific theater, however, the aircraft did its job, and that is where most of its color schemes come from.

How to work with the decals

The base has to be a smooth gloss coat — on a matte surface silvering appears under the film. Cut the individual markings out as close as possible, dip them into lukewarm water for a few seconds and let them soak until the film releases itself from the backing. Seat them in place with a soft brush, blot the excess water away and apply a decal softener; on surfaces with engraved panels and rivets reach for a stronger type. Once fully dry, spray over them with a clear coat so that the edge of the film disappears, and only then matte the surface down and weather it.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who build Pacific theater subjects in a single 1:72 scale
  • Anyone interested in early American fighters and their export versions
  • Builders who want to set their model apart from the schemes supplied in the kit
  • Collectors of decal series who are after a particular part of a series

The decals are supplied on their own. The kit, paints, glue and decal softener are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. This is purely a decal set to be used on a P-39 or P-400 model in 1:72 scale. The kit has to be obtained separately.

The subject is the use of the type over New Guinea and this is Part 1 of the series. The exact list of machines and the number of schemes are in the documentation included in the package.

To a smooth gloss coat. On a matte or rough surface air is trapped under the film and silvering appears, which can no longer be put right.

On smooth surfaces you can do without one, but on a wing with engraved panels and rivets it helps the decal settle so that it follows the surface and does not bubble.
