A decal set in 1:72 scale from DK Decals, intended for plastic models of the Bell P-39 Airacobra fighter and of the export P-400 version from their use over New Guinea. The package contains decals, not parts of a model — the base kit has to be obtained separately. This set is Part 3 of the series of the same name; Parts 1 and 2 are separate items, so the whole series can be completed.
The Airacobra was one of the most remarkable American fighter designs of its day. The Allison V-1710 engine was mounted behind the cockpit, a shaft ran under the floor to the propeller, and the freed-up nose left room for the armament and for a nose landing gear — at a time when the tailwheel layout still clearly predominated. The P-400 version was originally built for a British order as the Airacobra Mk.I and differed in the make-up of the nose armament. Without a turbocharger, performance fell away quickly at high altitude, so the type found its place mainly at low levels. The machines used over New Guinea carried striking individual markings and are therefore a rewarding subject for modelers.
Prepare the model with a gloss coat — only on a smooth surface will the decal avoid silvering. Cut the marking out close to the edge, dip it into lukewarm water for a few seconds and let it soak until the film releases. Seat it with a soft brush, press the water and the bubbles out, add a decal softener and let it dry undisturbed — do not touch it while it is soft. Finally spray the area with a clear coat so that the edge of the film disappears, and only then add the matte coat and the weathering.
The decals are supplied on their own. The kit, paints, glue and decal softener are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
