The set is an accessory for an aircraft kit in 1:72 scale, not an aircraft model. It concentrates on the powerplant of the late version of the Curtiss P-40 and suits anyone who wants an exposed engine section on the finished model or wants to build a field-maintenance diorama. CMK has specialized in detail sets for aircraft kits for a long time. The set is developed for one particular kit in this scale, so check in advance which one you have.
The Curtiss P-40N was the last major production version of the well-known fighter and came about as a lightened variant meant to improve the rate of climb. It was powered by the Allison V-1710 V12 engine, the same engine family as on most P-40s; versions with the British Merlin engine carried a different designation. It is the long nose with the V12 engine and the radiator beneath it that gives the whole type its distinctive silhouette, so an exposed engine section is a very rewarding sight on a model.
The parts may be resin or plastic, so match the procedure to the material of the parts in the package. Wash resin castings in lukewarm soapy water, cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw and level the surface with a file; sand wet and with respiratory protection. Resin is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue), plastic with ordinary modeling cement. Count on the fact that an exposed engine also means work on the cowling of the base kit, which has to be split or thinned down. Spray the engine in metallic shades, add a dark wash in the recesses and bring out the edges with a dry brush. You can add the pipework and the wiring from thin wire, which is what moves the overall impression on the most.
This is an accessory set, not a complete model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
