A radial engine for the P-47D Thunderbolt in 1:72 scale from Aires/Quickboost. A replacement for the engine section of a model that shows best with the cowling open.
Responsibility details are not available.
The radial engine is the first thing you see on a Thunderbolt from the front. An injection mold can only capture an eighteen-cylinder twin-row radial up to a point, though, and the front row usually hides the rear one. This accessory from Aires/Quickboost offers the engine section in a form that cannot be had from the box, and it is fitted into a model you obtain separately.
The Republic P-47D was the heaviest single-seat fighter the US Army Air Forces put into service during the war. It was powered by the air-cooled eighteen-cylinder Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp with a turbocharger whose ducting ran back under the cockpit. That engine was what made the Thunderbolt an outstanding machine at high altitude and at the same time a sturdy attack aircraft that could take a hit and still bring its pilot home. The cowling ahead of the engine has the wide, slightly elliptical section typical of the type.
Paint the engine separately before you set it into the cowling – once inside you can no longer reach the cylinder walls. Leave the cylinders in a darker metallic tone, the crankcase tends to be lighter and on many aircraft the front cover differed in shade. A fine wash will settle shadows between the cooling fins. Make the joint with the plastic of the fuselage with super glue and check dry that the engine sits at the right depth in the cowling.
