A scenery accessory from the Czech manufacturer Model Scene for dioramas in 1:72 scale. It is not a loose material and not a vehicle kit, but a laser-cut wooden part that is taken out of its frame, assembled and set into a scene as a self-contained element. The fence divides the surface of a base, separates a yard from a road, hides the transition between the terrain and the edge of the base and gives a scene its scale, because the viewer immediately judges the size of the surrounding figures and vehicles from the height of the fence.

The irregular cut

The top edges of the boards are not trued to a single line. The individual boards differ in length and in their ends, so the fence looks as though it had been knocked together by hand from leftover timber rather than made in a sawmill. The II. designation distinguishes the second version of this pattern in the range: the two versions can be alternated along a longer run so that the rhythm of the boards does not visibly repeat and the fence does not look like an impression of a single template.

Building and painting tips

Release the parts from the frame with a sharp scalpel rather than by twisting, and sand the fine nubs left by the tabs with a very fine grit abrasive paper. The wood is absorbent, so it proves best to paint it before gluing: heavily thinned acrylic paint, a wood stain or watercolor bring the texture out better than an opaque coat. Pulling a dry brush in light gray over it afterwards picks out the growth rings, and a dark brown-green wash at the foot suggests damp and a deposit of soil. Glue with PVA wood glue or with thin cyanoacrylate. Do not build the fence perfectly level; a bay leaning or bowed slightly looks more credible.
