An Xtradecal decal sheet in 1:72 scale charting the markings of No. 2 Squadron RAF in the years 1920 to 2002. It is an accessory for models, not a kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
A sheet of waterslide decals from the British brand Xtradecal in 1:72 scale put together as a cross-section of the history of one flying unit. Sheets like this are popular with modelers because they offer a different way of building from an ordinary type sheet: instead of one aircraft in several forms you get the markings of the machines that one squadron used over the decades. From a single sheet a series of models can therefore be built which together tell the development of the unit from the biplane era to modern jets. Which particular types and machines the sheet contains is given on the packaging and in the instructions supplied; compare what the manufacturer gives on the packaging before buying, so that you know which models you will need for it.
The span from 1920 to 2002 covers more than eight decades of service by one squadron of the Royal Air Force. In that time several generations of equipment passed through units of this kind, and with them the way of marking: from the striking period bands and badges between the world wars, through simplified wartime markings, to the low-contrast gray lettering of the modern era. The sheet is therefore mixed by type: each variant belongs to a different aircraft and assumes the matching kit.
With unit sheets it is the small lettering and badges that decide, and there tend to be many of them and they are small. Trim the film close to the print: the narrower the transparent border, the less will show once dry. Do not soak small decals in water for long; as soon as they release they easily fold up or float away. It helps to fish them out of the dish together with the backing and to carry them on a damp brush. Use a softener to settle them into engraved lines, but carefully: a softened film must not be shifted, otherwise it will tear. Work in groups and let them dry between one another. Choose the final varnish to suit the era of the machine: interwar machines will take a semi-gloss, modern ones a matte surface.
This is an accessory for models. The sheet contains neither kits, paints nor glue.
