About product

UM 1:72 Sd.Kfz.138/1 Bison: self-propelled gun

This injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale from the Ukrainian maker UM (Unimodels) represents the German Bison (Grille) self-propelled gun in the version on the Panzer 38(t) chassis. The set usually holds photo-etched parts and plastic tracks built up by the link-and-length method; this variant captures the later configuration.

The real subject

The Bison, in German the Grille, came about by installing the 15 cm sIG 33 heavy infantry gun on the Panzer 38(t) chassis, derived from the Czechoslovak LT vz. 38. It served as mobile fire support for the infantry and was fielded from 1943 on various fronts. The tall open superstructure carried the gun and its crew.

Building and painting tips

Finish the running gear and the inner compartment with the gun before you close the superstructure. Glue the plastic with liquid modeling cement and use cyanoacrylate glue on the photo-etched parts. We recommend an airbrush over a primer and after that washes and pigments for mud and dust effects on the chassis and in the fighting compartment.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of German self-propelled artillery in 1:72
  • Anyone interested in vehicles on the Panzer 38(t) chassis
  • Modelers with experience of photo-etched parts
  • Builders of dioramas from the Second World War

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

Yes, the UM kit usually comes with photo-etched parts and plastic tracks built up by the link-and-length method.

Because of the small parts we would recommend it to more experienced modelers of armored vehicles in 1:72 scale.
