A figure set in 1:72 scale from the manufacturer Strelets-R with the subject of the rebel army associated with the revolt of Spartacus in the period of ancient Rome. It is not a kit of hardware, but an addition for dioramas and historical scenes.

The real subject

The rebel army differed from the regular Roman forces above all in how it came about. It had neither uniform supply nor arsenals, and the equipment was made up of what was available, captured or made locally. The result was an uneven mixture: alongside military arms, agricultural and craft tools adapted for fighting and improvised protective gear appeared. It is precisely this variety that is the main asset of the set for depiction.

Building and painting tips

With regular units you strive for uniformity; here it is the other way round. Choose a slightly different shade of cloth for every figure, various tones of leather and differing wear of metal, so that no two characters look the same. It pays to mix two or three variants of a base brown and to vary them at random while painting. Render the metal rather dark and matte, with light highlights only on the edges. The procedure of preparation is standard here too: deburr the parting lines with a sharp scalpel, apply primer for the sake of adhesion on soft plastic, lay the base, draw the shadows in with a wash and accent the edges with an almost dry brush. Glue to the bases with cyanoacrylate.
