About product

The Spitfire over northwestern Europe 1944 to 1945, decals 1:72, part one

A decal sheet in 1:72 scale aimed at the Spitfires of successful fighter pilots over northwestern Europe in the years 1944 and 1945. According to the name this is the first part of the theme. The sheet serves for marking a model that you build from your own kit; by itself it is not a model.

The real subject

The Supermarine Spitfire was a British single-seat all-metal low-wing fighter with a liquid-cooled V engine and with an elliptical wing, which is a recognition mark for the type. During the war it went through a number of versions with growing engine power and modified shapes of wing and cockpit canopy, so the machines from the end of the war differ distinctly from the early versions. The designation ace was used in period practice for a pilot with five or more confirmed aerial victories; their machines were often given personal markings besides unit codes, which makes them a rewarding modeling theme.

Application tips

In 1:72 scale the preparation of the surface is what mainly decides the result. Before application, apply gloss clear, so that air does not get under the film and no silvery edge arises. Let large motifs slide into place on the model on a layer of water and correct the position with a brush, so that no tearing occurs. Where there are engraved panel lines under a motif, pierce the decal with the tip of a scalpel and apply softener, so that the film sinks into the engraving. Check the personal markings on the fuselage against the illustration, including the side of the aircraft, since with decals that are applied to one side only it easily happens that a motif is swapped as a mirror image. Finally unify the finished markings with an overcoat according to the degree of sheen required.

Who the sheet is for

  • builders of British fighter hardware in 1:72 scale
  • modelers who build models with particular personal markings
  • anyone interested in the theme of the closing stage of the war over Europe
  • collectors who put a collection together from several sheets

The decals are an accessory, not a model. A kit, paints, clear coat and softener are not included in the package.

FAQ

No, this is a decal sheet only. The model, paints and clear coat have to be obtained separately.

In period usage it marked a fighter pilot with five or more confirmed aerial victories.

Before buying, compare the illustration of the sheet with the version of your kit.

By applying it onto gloss clear and using softener. A matte base holds air under the film, which is what causes the edge.
