About product

The SU-76i in 1:72 scale from UM

An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet SU-76i self-propelled gun in 1:72 scale. The letter i in the designation is neither a typo nor a variant of the ordinary SU-76: it marks out the machines built on foreign, that is captured, chassis. This is therefore a markedly different vehicle from the better-known SU-76 on the chassis of the T-70 light tank, which is worth knowing before you buy.

The real subject

The SU-76i came about in 1943 by rebuilding captured German chassis of the Panzer III tank and the StuG III assault gun. A new fixed superstructure with sloped walls was set on the chassis, and a 76.2 mm gun was fitted inside it. The result was a vehicle with an enclosed fighting compartment, and therefore better crew protection than the open compartment of the production SU-76 offered. The number built was limited and matched the number of usable captured chassis, so the machine appeared with the units only briefly. It is precisely this unusual origin that makes the SU-76i a rewarding subject for collectors and for modelers who enjoy building conversions and improvised solutions.

Building and painting tips

Kits in 1:72 from Eastern European makers tend to have fine sprue gates and moldings, which are better separated with a razor saw or a sharp knife than with nippers, so that the thin parts do not snap. Assemble the wheels and the running gear on a flat surface, otherwise the model will not sit on all its wheels. Warm the tracks gently before gluing so that they can be wrapped around the drive sprocket with a natural sag. A superstructure with sloped walls responds well to lightening the upper surfaces and a dark wash in the recesses. A captured chassis offers room for deliberate differences in shade between the lower hull and the superstructure, but keep them restrained so that the model does not look blotchy.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of less usual tracked hardware of the Second World War.
  • Modelers building a collection in the space-saving 1:72 scale.
  • Anyone interested in conversions and improvised engineering solutions.
  • Builders of dioramas on the theme of the Eastern Front in 1943.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. The SU-76i came about by rebuilding captured German Panzer III and StuG III chassis and had an enclosed superstructure. The ordinary SU-76 stood on the chassis of the T-70 light tank and had an open fighting compartment.

The number built was limited by the number of usable captured chassis, so the machine appeared with the units only briefly.

Rather for a builder with some experience. The parts in this scale are fine and the running gear has to be assembled accurately so that the model sits on all its wheels.
