This limited edition from Eduard is of the DUAL COMBO type, so the package contains two complete injection-molded plastic kits of the American P-51D Mustang fighter in 1:72 scale. The edition is themed around the machines committed to long-range missions from the island of Iwo Jima in the closing stages of the Second World War in the Pacific. Eduard limited editions tend to come with photo-etched parts, painting masks and a generous decal sheet with a number of color options of the US Army Air Forces.

The real subject

The North American P-51D Mustang was one of the highest-performing fighters of the Second World War. Thanks to the powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engine (built under license in America by Packard) and its great range it became the ideal escort fighter. After the island of Iwo Jima was taken, Mustangs flew very long range (VLR) missions from it over Honshu in Japan, where they escorted B-29 Superfortress bombers and attacked ground targets. It is precisely these operations that the edition is devoted to.

Building and painting tips

Use liquid cement for plastic and finish the cockpit before closing the fuselage. The natural metal finish of the Mustangs is reached with a good gloss silver metallic lacquer applied with an airbrush over a smooth base; the masks supplied make sharp transitions easier. Lay the decals onto a gloss clear coat and settle them with a decal softener. The package contains two models, so a pair of machines in different markings can be built.
