Injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet Tu-128M heavy long-range interceptor in 1:72 scale from Trumpeter. The model has a finely engraved surface with panel lines, clear parts for the cockpit glazing and a rich breakdown of parts. The kit captures the massive dimensions of the real aircraft: even in 1:72 it is a respectably large model.
The Tu-128 (NATO reporting name Fiddler) was a Soviet long-range interceptor intended to defend the vast airspace of the Soviet Union, especially the sparsely populated northern regions with no dense network of airfields. It is among the largest fighter aircraft in history. A crew of two and a powerful onboard radar allowed it to intercept targets at long range; the main armament consisted of R-4 air-to-air guided missiles (NATO reporting name AA-5) on underwing pylons, usually in a combination of the radar-guided and the infrared-guided versions. The designation Tu-128M belongs to the modernized variant with an improved weapons system.
Use a thin plastic cement and clean up the mating surfaces of the parts carefully with a file or sanding paper. Paint and assemble the cockpit and the interior before closing the fuselage, and the same goes for the landing gear bays. It is a good idea to mask the cockpit glazing before spraying. Assemble and paint the missiles and the pylons separately and fit them at the end. For an even finish on the large surfaces an airbrush over a primer is ideal, followed by the decals on a gloss coat and a matte varnish to unify the whole.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
