The set contains replacement tracks for a model of the Japanese amphibious tank Type 2 Ka-Mi in 1:72 scale. It is not a kit of the tank but an accessory that replaces the tracks from the box. On a vehicle with running gear as broken up as this the swap pays off: the track is visible along the whole length of the silhouette and its relief markedly affects the final impression of a finished model.

The real subject

The Type 2 Ka-Mi was a Japanese amphibious tank of the Second World War. It grew out of the design of a contemporary light tank and for swimming it used detachable pontoons at the bow and the stern, which were released after landing. The running gear consisted of an arrangement of small road wheels with suspension typical of Japanese light tanks, supplemented by long, narrow tracks. That makes the vehicle unmistakable on the modeling scene and it tends to be a rewarding subject for landing dioramas.

Use and tips

• Check that the pitch and the width of the track match the running gear of your kit
• Assemble and align the small road wheels before you fit the track, as you will not reach them later
• Paint the tracks separately from the hull and fit them only after the base coat
• Keep the sag between the rollers restrained, as a long narrow track easily tempts one into exaggerated droop
• If you are building a landing scene, allow for a wet look: gloss varnish on the underside and sand caught in the track

Who the set is for

It is intended for modelers who build the Type 2 Ka-Mi in 1:72 scale and want tracks with better relief than the kit offers. It also suits where the tracks in the box are made of a material that is hard to paint. The tiny parts of a small scale assume a more experienced hand.
