About product

The American AN-M64A1 500-pound bomb in 1:72 scale (Brengun)

This resin set from the Czech maker Brengun represents the American AN-M64A1 aerial bomb of 500 pounds, that is approximately 227 kilograms, in 1:72 scale. It is an accessory to an aircraft model: the bomb is hung under the wing, in the bomb bay, or laid in an airfield diorama. The kit, glue and paints are not part of the package.

Why resin for carried stores

A bomb in the 500-pound weight class was the universal American store from fighter-bombers to heavy bombers, so it turns up on models constantly. Plastic parts from kits usually have two weaknesses: a parting seam running the whole length of the cylinder, which has to be filled and sanded, and fins that are too thick. On a bomb, though, the tail cruciform is exactly what a viewer notices. A resin casting comes with no seam and with fins of a thickness acceptable for the scale, so the slow work that would otherwise be repeated on every further piece is avoided.

Tips for working and painting

Wash the castings in warm soapy water to remove the mold release agent and let them dry thoroughly. Cut the casting block off with a saw and sand the area wet and with respiratory protection. It is bonded with super glue; on heavier castings reinforce the joint with a wire pin. Apply a primer before painting. When painting, it helps to work from a darker base to a lightened center of the cylinder, so the bomb does not look flat. The color bands on the body are better masked than painted freehand, because their width and straightness are immediately visible on a finished model.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of American Second World War aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who build bombers and fighter-bombers with a full load of stores
  • Makers of airfield dioramas with armament equipment

This is an accessory set in resin, not a kit. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a resin accessory, a model of a bomb that is hung on an aircraft kit you have already bought or used in a diorama.

Plan how many stores you will show on the model according to the contents of the package.

A resin casting has no parting seam across the body and has thinner fins. The filling and sanding that would be repeated on every further piece are avoided.

Always by masking, not with a brush freehand. An uneven or unequally wide band is immediately visible on a finished model, especially when the bombs are side by side.
