1:72 Wooden Corral (resin set)

1:72 Wooden Corral — a wooden corral for a 1:72 diorama

A corral is one of the few structures that create a story by themselves: it divides up the area of the base, suggests a farmstead and gives the scene a natural edge. This resin set from the Czech maker Hauler is prepared for 1:72 scale and is an accessory for a finished scene, not a kit of a vehicle or an aircraft. The material is given in the name itself, so these are resin castings with all their advantages and demands.

What the accessory is for

It comes into its own in rural and farm scenes, at farmsteads, barns and watering places, but also at the edge of a field airstrip and in military scenes set in a village. A wooden corral also works well as a frame for the composition: it leads the eye into the scene and separates the main model from the open area of the base.

Building and painting tips

First wash the resin parts in lukewarm soapy water so that the mold release agent is removed from the surface, otherwise the paint will not hold. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutting disc rather than breaking them off, and sand with respiratory protection, ideally under water. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue, as ordinary cement for plastic does not work on resin. A base coat is a compulsory step. Wood is painted up from a darker brownish-gray base, through thin glazes and drybrushing in a lighter tone that brings out the texture; add gray for weathered wood and keep mossy shades only at the foot of the posts. At the end unify the surface with matte varnish and hide the transition into the terrain with pigment and static grass.
