Maple dry red, foliage for 1:72 and 1:87 (Model Scene)

Small maple leaves in a dry red version from the Czech diorama vegetation manufacturer Model Scene. The name describes the color and state of the foliage, not the state of a tree — it is a loose material, a bag of leaves, not a bare and not a finished tree. The size of the leaf matches 1:72 and 1:87 scale, so the material fits dioramas in the smaller scales as well as railroad layouts.

When to use dry red foliage

The shade matches a leaf that has finished turning for autumn and is beginning to dry out — that is late autumn, the end of the season and scenes after the first frosts. It works most strongly on the ground: fallen leaves around trunks, in ditches, at the feet of walls, in heaps raked up by fences. It can also be used on a crown, though, if you are building a tree at the moment when it still holds most of its leaves, and equally on roofs, in gutters and in the joints where the wind carries leaves.

Application tips

Apply thinned PVA glue with a drop of dish soap to the terrain and sprinkle the foliage into it from a dish or a sieve. The key to credibility is irregularity — do not make a continuous carpet but islands of varying density according to the prevailing wind direction. On a tree armature use a spray adhesive and work in thin layers. The dry shade goes well with brown foliage of other species and with short brown static grass; mixing two materials makes the ground immediately more convincing.
