About product

The battleship Bismarck in 1:800 scale from Academy

An injection-molded plastic kit of the battleship Bismarck in 1:800 scale from the South Korean manufacturer Academy. The small scale means a compact finished model and a low part count, so this is one of the most accessible ways of building this iconic ship. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

Bismarck was a battleship of the Kriegsmarine, launched in February 1939 and taken into service in 1940. It measured roughly 251 meters in length and 36 meters in beam, the full load displacement was around 53000 tons and the top speed was over 29 knots. The main armament consisted of eight 380 mm guns in four twin turrets, complemented by a secondary and an anti-aircraft battery. The ship made a single combat sortie into the Atlantic in May 1941, during which it was sunk after a pursuit lasting several days by the Royal Navy. The silhouette with its massive superstructure, single funnel and characteristic arrangement of gun turrets is among the best known in naval history.

Building and painting tips

Glue the parts with liquid cement for plastic, which is drawn into the joint by capillary action and leaves no squeeze-out. It is practical to paint the hull and the superstructures separately before the final assembly, as otherwise the lower decks are hard to reach. In such a small scale a thin layer of paint from an airbrush works best, so that the fine details are not flooded. Shade the deck on its own, and at the end a fine dark wash into the recesses and a dry brush on the edges of the superstructures help. We recommend adding a base or a glazed display case to the vessel, as a small model is easily damaged.

Who the model is for

  • Beginners looking for a kit without hundreds of parts
  • Collectors building a collection of battleships in one scale

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No, it is a classic plastic kit. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted, and glue and paints are not included in the package.

In 1:800 scale the length corresponds to roughly one eight-hundredth of the real ship, so the finished model is compact and fits even a smaller display case.

Yes. Thanks to the small scale the kit has a low part count and the build is quick, so it suits as a first naval model.
