A construction kit from the mechanical robotic range of the Japanese company Tamiya. The model walks on two legs and gets its energy not from batteries, but from the hand-cranked generator enclosed: turning the crank spins the generator, which produces current for the motor in the robot. It is a clear demonstration of the conversion of muscle power into electricity and back into movement. Two versions of the head are in the package, an ostrich one and a duck one, so you choose how the finished model will look.
The generator unit has a gear ratio of 38.2:1 and delivers a voltage of roughly 2.5 V with no load. The direction of the walk is set by the direction in which the crank is turned, so the robot goes forward or backs up. The speed of the walk depends directly on how quickly you turn the crank: slow turning means a slow walk, and brisk turning gets the model going at full speed. Because there are no batteries in the model, you do not have to deal with buying them or with flat cells, and the set is ready to use at any time.
The parts are joined by snapping together, the build is simple and calls for no soldering. Watch that the joints run freely and that the lead between the generator and the model does not get in the robot's way as it moves. Turn the crank smoothly, as sharp jerking shows in the walk as a stutter. The model walks best on a level floor with a little grip. Painting is not needed, as the parts are made of colored plastic.
The set is supplied unassembled. Tools beyond those in the package are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
