A captain, in German Hauptmann, was traditionally the commander of a company, that is, the first level at which a commander answered for several dozen up to a hundred men and at the same time stayed in direct contact with them. An officer figure differs from a rank-and-file soldier in the cut of the uniform, in the accessories and in the bearing; that is exactly what makes it a rewarding subject, because it carries more small elements in a small space. Only the rank is given in the name; a closer period placement is missing from it.
With officer figures it is cleanness of execution that decides: apply the edges of the facings and the buttons with a fine brush and heavily thinned paint, twice over rather than in one heavy layer. Build the face up gradually from a mid skin layer so that it does not go gray. A matte overcoat at the end will even out the surface and mute unwanted sheens, which are what disturbs the eye most on a finished figure. Keep an eye on the bearing from the side as you paint, because with officer figures it is the stance that gives the whole figure its character.
