About product

The Honda RA272E, winner of the 1965 Mexican Grand Prix, in 1:24 scale from Hasegawa

A plastic kit of the Honda RA272 Formula 1 car in 1:24 scale. The manufacturer gives 93 parts and decals for the car with race number 11, that is for the machine with which Richie Ginther won the Mexican Grand Prix in 1965. The designation RA272E belongs to the engine that powered the car.

The real subject

Honda entered Formula 1 in 1964 as a complete newcomer and built the whole car, engine included, by itself, which at the time was not a matter of course even for experienced teams. The RA272E engine was a gasoline 1.5-liter V12 mounted transversely behind the driver. In the 1965 Mexican Grand Prix Ginther led from start to finish and brought Honda its first Formula 1 victory, in its eleventh start. It was at the same time the last race of the 1.5-liter era, so the victory has stayed in history as a precisely placed full stop: a Japanese manufacturer won at the moment when one technical epoch ended and another began.

Building and painting tips

The white body with its red circle is merciless to the surface beneath, so build it over white primer and apply thin coats. Give it gloss varnish before the decals, seal the decals once they are dry and move to a semi-gloss finish if you like. The engine and the exhausts deserve metallic shades and a dark wash, because on an open car they are always in view. Dry-fit the small suspension parts so that the car stands straight on all four wheels.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers of historic Formula 1 cars

  • Admirers of the 1.5-liter era and its V12 engines

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

Richie Ginther led it from start to finish and brought Honda its first Formula 1 victory, in its eleventh start. It was also the last race of the 1.5-liter era.

The basis is white primer, several thin coats of paint and patience while they dry. Give the car gloss varnish before the decals, seal the decals with another coat of varnish afterwards and even the surface out with a semi-gloss if you like.
