A resin replacement set of wheels for a kit of the Vought F-8E Crusader carrier fighter in 1:32 scale, in the version designated Type 1. It is not a model of the aircraft but a detailing accessory: the resin castings have a sharp rendering of the tread pattern, a legible shape of the rims and detail on the hubs, and they do without the mold parting line that you have to sand away on plastic wheels — while on wheels in particular every pass of the sandpaper damages the rendering of the tread. The manufacturer lists the Crusader wheels in two versions, Type 1 and Type 2.
The Vought F-8 Crusader is a single-seat carrier fighter of the US Navy and Marine Corps of the 1950s, unmistakable in design thanks to its variable-incidence wing, which tilted to a greater angle of attack for takeoff and landing and allowed it to land with the fuselage at a lesser angle. The F-8E is one of the later production versions with a more capable radar and expanded options for external stores. The undercarriage is a tricycle arrangement with a nose wheel and, as with every carrier aircraft, it is sized for hard landings, which shows in the sturdiness of the legs and of the wheels.
First wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water, so that no mold release stays on them. Cut off the casting blocks with a saw or a fine cutter and true the cuts up with fine sandpaper, ideally wet and with respiratory protection. They are bonded with super glue based on cyanoacrylate; a cement for plastic will not join resin. Lay a primer down before painting. Set the tire apart from the rim by shade — instead of pure black reach for a dark gray with a hint of brown — and bring out the lettering and the rendering of the tread on the sidewalls with a light dark wash. The white rims of carrier aircraft come alive nicely with a fine dirty wash around the bolts.
This is an accessory set, not a model of the aircraft. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
