About product

Turned gun barrels for the Soviet heavy tank SMK in 1:35 scale

This is a detail accessory for a kit, not a model of the vehicle. According to the name, the set from the Polish maker Aber holds two turned barrels: one of 76.2 mm caliber of the L-11 type and one of 45 mm caliber of the M1932 type. They take the place of the plastic barrels from the kit, which have visible mold seam and tend to be solid at the muzzle. A metal barrel is perfectly straight, has a correctly circular cross section and a bore, which can be seen at first glance on a finished model.

The real subject

The SMK was a Soviet heavy tank of the late 1930s, built as a multi-turreted prototype. The main turret carried a gun of 76.2 mm caliber, the smaller front turret a gun of 45 mm caliber. The design was tried in combat in the Winter War but never saw production; the development of Soviet heavy tanks went on along the simpler single-turret route. It is precisely the pair of different calibers that makes the SMK a rewarding subject to build and at the same time the reason why both barrels are supplied in the set.

Building and painting tips

Cut the plastic barrel off with a saw where the metal part joins it and level the area. Degrease the metal parts with alcohol or mineral spirits before gluing. They are glued with super glue; on larger areas a two-part epoxy glue helps. Before painting, apply a base intended for metal surfaces to the metal, otherwise the paint will rub off during handling. It is a good idea to leave the bore of the muzzle dark and to bring it out slightly with a dust shade matching the surroundings of the rest of the model.

Who the set is for

  • builders of Soviet armored vehicles in 1:35 scale
  • modelers who demand sharp barrel detail with no mold seam
  • competition modelers and builders of dioramas
  • more experienced modelers used to working with metal and super glue

The set is an accessory to a kit, which it does not replace. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise. Check before buying that the set matches your kit.

FAQ

It is not. It is a set of turned barrels that are fitted onto a plastic kit of the SMK tank in 1:35 scale.

According to the name it holds two barrels: one of 76.2 mm caliber of the L-11 type and one of 45 mm caliber of the M1932 type.

The set is intended for a kit of the SMK tank in 1:35 scale. Please check the specific compatibility before buying.

Degrease it, glue it with super glue and use a base for metal before painting. Without a base the paint rubs off smooth metal easily.
