About product

Black Eagle, Object 640, 1:35 (Amusing Hobby)

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:35 scale from Amusing Hobby. The subject is Object 640, nicknamed the Black Eagle, a Russian experimental tank of the late 1990s. To be clear: this is a prototype, not a production combat vehicle. The model is therefore aimed above all at admirers of prototypes and designs that were never realized. You are building a machine that never entered military service, and it is right to know that in advance.

The real subject

Object 640 was created at the design bureau in Omsk and was to represent a new generation of Russian tank following on from the T-80 series. A mock-up of the vehicle was shown publicly in 1997 at the Omsk defense exhibition, and in 1999 a running demonstrator followed with a lengthened hull carrying seven pairs of road wheels instead of the six of the T-80. A characteristic feature was a completely new turret with a prominent rear module for the autoloader, separated from the crew, and extensive additional armor protection at the front.

The design never got beyond the prototype and demonstrator stage. The program was halted at the beginning of the 21st century and Object 640 never entered production or service. The company that developed it later ceased to exist and its projects passed elsewhere. A number of technical details about the vehicle therefore remain unclear.

Building and painting tips

Glue with liquid cement for plastic. Assemble and paint the running gear and the tracks before you close the hull up and fit the fenders. Apply primer before painting; the large smooth surfaces of the turret and the hull come out well with an airbrush and fine shade modulation. Because this is not a production machine, the modeler is not tied to a period camouflage scheme as strictly as with ordinary vehicles, and there is room for your own interpretation. Build the weathering with dark washes in the recesses and pigments on the running gear.

Who the model is for

  • Enthusiasts of prototypes and designs that were never realized
  • Players of tank games who want to build a machine known from game titles
  • Collectors of modern Russian armor and its development after the T-80
  • Modelers with basic experience of building armored vehicles

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It existed, but only as a prototype. A mock-up of the vehicle was shown publicly in 1997 and a running demonstrator with a lengthened hull carrying seven pairs of road wheels followed in 1999. The program went no further than these demonstration vehicles.

No. Object 640 never entered production or service. The program was halted at the beginning of the 21st century. So you are building a model of a machine that never reached service, which is a common and popular genre with prototypes.

It was based on the T-80 series. The 1999 demonstrator had a lengthened hull with seven pairs of road wheels instead of six and a completely new turret with a prominent rear module for the autoloader, separated from the crew.

Precisely because this was not a production machine, the modeler is not tied to a particular period scheme as strictly as with ordinary vehicles. You start from the demonstration vehicles, and there is room for your own interpretation of the camouflage.
